Superfood of the Month – Tea

Tea is one of the most popular beverages around the world, as well as one of the healthiest. For centuries, tea has been consumed for its medicinal qualities and modern research has strongly suggested that tea provides a wide variety of health benefits! Though, the results are mixed, more and more evidence is showing health benefits from daily ingestion of this ancient beverage.

What are the benefits of drinking tea? Thousands of studies have been done on tea and with mixed results.

  • For your heart: Decreased risk of heart attack, improved blood pressure and less risk of blood clotting due to atherosclerosis
  • For your cancer risk: According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), consumption of green tea is associated with a reduced risk of skin, esophagus, stomach, colon, pancreas, lung, bladder, prostate and breast cancer. The ACS cautions, however, that the research is limited on humans and states that relying on this as treatment is ill-advised.
  • Weight loss: Despite the hype, green tea does not appear to aid in weight loss when meals are calorie-controlled.
  • Strong Bones: Current research supports does show a positive relationship between bone density, osteoporosis risk and tea consumption.

Keep in mind that not all tea drinks are created equal. The body’s access to the benefits in tea might vary by the type of tea, the canning and processing changes and the way it was brewed. If you’re looking to get the most from your tea, make sure that it is minimally processed is of the black, green, white or oolong variety. Also, while tea extracts or supplements might be the next big thing, there is very little research on these forms of tea intake.
